This season we celebrate the careers of 20th-century game-changers Pierre Boulez and Luciano Berio, whose inventive, iconoclastic legacies continue to echo through the sounds, styles and techniques of today. The Ensemble intercontemporain 鈥� founded by Boulez in 1976 鈥� and Pierre Bleuse celebrate the pair in a concert full of sonic theatre. Boulez鈥檚 tour de force for clarinet, the shadow-duet Dialogue de l鈥檕mbre double, meets Berio鈥檚 allusive, tragicomic music-drama Recital I, which remixes opera鈥檚 history via the composer鈥檚 own distinctive imagination. Tragicomedy also streaks through Berio鈥檚 Sequenza V, which prompts a solo trombonist to explore a plethora of unlikely playing (and vocal) techniques.
